For many of us, Life is often difficult and our situation may seem dire. We despair and can see no way forward. We live our lives on “autopilot” without understanding and awareness of why we do what we do and especially why we are suffering. We live on the fringes of life without getting to know our depths and our potential as humans. Many people expend great effort avoiding precisely this knowledge.

At a desperate point, when we are thoroughly miserable, frightened, unable to sustain our relationships, have problems at work, have physical illnesses and emotional symptoms such as depression and anxiety, and when the old ways of “solving” things no longer work, we turn to something different which may help. Psychotherapy or counselling may come up as a possible way to deal with our problems. Your reasons for considering psychotherapy are your own, but most people enter this process when they become aware, or are made aware, that their lives are not working.

Explanations of the psychotherapeutic process can be highly technical and the terms may be obscure for people not familiar with the area. I prefer to explain the process through the use of images and anecdotes.

What is psychotherapy all about?
